We’re already several days into January as we publish this post, satiated from a full and happy holiday season, recouping from 2025, and planning some amazing things for 2026. January in Paris can be cold, gray, and a little sad (as it is across much of the Northern Hemisphere), but it’s also one of the best times to slow down, refocus on passions and projects, and even learn something new. Whatever this year has in store, one thing is certain: Paris should always be on the agenda.
So, if you’re wondering what to do in Paris in January, we’ve got you covered. Below are our top 4 things to do in Paris this January, as we kick off the new year with excitement, spirit, and creativity - embracing the quieter, more local side of the city we love.
And of course, if you’d rather skip straight to the essentials (the best coffee, wine bars, food, and drink in Paris, you can grab our guide right off the bat. We’re constantly updating it, and it’s access for life.

1. Take in a show in Paris
We’ve spoken to numerous people who’ve said a main goal for 2026 is to “do more stuff in the real world.” In other words: less time on phones and tablets, and more time embracing human interaction and live experiences. If that resonates, there’s no better way to start than by seeing a show in Paris.
And why not make it a spicy show? We are in Paris, after all! Throughout January and beyond you can catch the iconic musical Chicago at the Casino de Paris. Think love, lust, murder, and plenty of heat. It’s one of the best ways to stay warm during a Paris winter.
Looking for something equally bold but with a higher dose of laughter? La Cage aux Folles plays through January 11th at the Théâtre du Châtelet and is a fabulous choice for anyone seeking classic Parisian theater with humor, and heart.

Learn something new in Paris this winter
Perhaps you’ve decided to jump into this new year with the ambition to pick up something new. The best way to do this for locals and visitors alike is to choose a museum you’ve never been to and go with a guide.
That’s exactly what Jay is doing throughout 2026. A few times each month, we curate a list of Paris museums for him to visit. His Patrons vote on where he should go next. We then wrangle our good friend (and phenomenal guide) Amber into a date, and they spend the morning diving deep into art, history, and niche stories you probably haven’t heard before.
And the best part about this? You can do the same thing! Amber actually gives private tours of many museums around the city, and her stories are super niche and detailed. She’s pretty popular, especially for her private Louvre tours, so if you’re planning a trip, be sure to reach out well in advance to book. You can contact her directly at [email protected].

Relax and Escape the grind
Perhaps you’re craving more time to relax and escape the daily grind this winter. In our opinion, one of the most immersive and relaxing things to do in Paris is spending time at the Atelier des Lumières. Picture a dark room, dancing lights, and loud music. Sit against a wall and immerse yourself in the floor-to-ceiling projections. It’s a uniquely Parisian experience and a perfect activity for cold January days in Paris.
This January, there is a dinosaur exhibit. We can’t promise it’ll be peaceful, and it may even be a little scary, but it’s bound to be super cool.

And finally, because we could all use a little more childlike belief in the new year…
…be sure to head to the Jardin d’Acclimatation for their winter light show, Japan in Light. This immersive light experience is a favorite for families visiting Paris and one of the best things to do in Paris with kids in January. The glowing installations and illuminated pathways guide you through three phases of Japanese culture, creating a magical experience for everyone.
It’s especially great if you’re traveling with young kids in Paris, as the walk is visually engaging without being overwhelming. And perhaps the best part? There’s a food court at the end, perfect for warming up after the show. Grab a bowl of ramen, let the kids recharge with a cup of cocoa, and head out for the rest of your evening!
